Rider safety and support

Except for short sections of coned lanes, all routes are on the open road. Riders share the road with cars and must obey rules of the road. Ride to the right, no more than two abreast and follow police directions at all intersection.  Volunteer route guides are stationed along the route to provide route directions and rider aid. Volunteer riding marshals ride along to assist. Rest stops are approximately 10 miles apart, staffed by volunteers and a nurse, and will be stocked with energy foods, water and porta-johns.

Routes start 30 minutes apart, and all routes merge as they approach the final 10 miles to UB. Please be prepared for high volume bicycle traffic and a slower ride in the final 10 miles back to UB. Each route has its own closing time based on a reasonable riding pace for the distance. Riders who do not reach route “gates” on time will be asked to divert to short cuts along the way in order to keep riding.

Helmets are required for all riders on all routes.

Join the Riding Marshal Team Today!

Are you a returning Rider? The Ride needs your help! We are looking for skilled Riders to join our 2017 Rider Safety Team! These leaders will help us maintain the rules of the road and ensure that cycling etiquette is upheld throughout the event. As a Riding Marshal, you will still take part in all of the fun of The Ride—we’ll just ask that you keep an eye out for other Riders, encourage safe riding, and assist if needed.

If you choose to be a Riding Marshal, you’ll wear a special vest during The Ride. We’ll give you all of the information you need at a pre-Ride meeting.
