Featured Rider of The Week

This event has become a very important opportunity for me; not only to celebrate my own personal journey with Multiple Myeloma, but also to actively participate in raising money to support the research that will eradicate cancer. This year, I’ve committed to ride 65 miles between 8/1/20- 8/21/20… as well as fund raise, with a goal of $5,000.

Featured Team of The Week

So, our team started in 2010 with only 2 riders. Although this year is a little different and we don’t have as many riders (30 riders in previous years) as in the past, our team has grown each year and currently we have 20 on the team. Since 2010 our team to date has raised $203,870.00 for Roswell, I myself have raised $41,272.00 for Roswell!! We are very proud of that number and thankful for all generous supporters every year.

I started the team in 2010 because a family friend was battling Ovarian Cancer and it just seemed like such an easy thing to do “Ride a bike” and raise funds. That same year in September, I discovered a lump in my breast just 10 short days after my annual gynecological exam (which included a breast exam) that my Dr. had missed. My first thought of course was “I AM GOING TO ROSWELL” & I am going to beat this disease. I can proudly say that on this 25th Anniversary of the Ride I celebrate 10 years Cancer Free in September. We have 4 “SURVIVORS on our team, we all ride for many reasons like self, family member or a close friend who has battled Cancer. I have an amazing highly motivated team raising funds year after year with basket raffles & other year-round fundraisers.

For me personally the ride is like “Christmas”, I look forward to it all year!! My absolute favorite part of the weekend celebration is riding in the Peloton. I love finding my name painted on Carlton Street!!! At the start which is always at Roswell, all the riders hold up cards with names of current patients on the 6th floor which is very emotional as I was once one of those patients. One particular year my Uncle Neil was one of those patients having 1/3 of his lung removed on that day. When I showed up at Roswell before lining up, I was approached by ride founder Mitch Flynn. He handed me a card with my Aunt Bonnie’s writing on it that said “Neil” Lung. I was so humbled that Mitch took the time to find me so I could proudly hold this card up for my Uncle Neil.

I love that something as simple as riding a bike & raising funds can give hope to so many. It is always a very emotional day for me, especially at the start when they have all the survivors raise their hands. I was shocked at how many people around me raised their hand too. I know the funds my team raises is making a big difference in research for a cure, breakthrough treatments & clinical trials which I was on one for 5 years (and will be followed for life) and currently on another where I get an infusion every 6 months. I am forever grateful for Roswell, my Doctors & my awesome family and friends.
