Team Donor Center Makes Twice the Patient Impact
In addition to collecting lifesaving blood and platelet donations for patients at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Donor Center’s Ride team has raised more than a quarter-million dollars over the years.
In honor of National Blood Donor Month, here is why the Donor Center is so critical to patient care at Roswell Park and what makes their team experience so special every year.
What Is National Blood Donor Month?
National Blood Donor Month began in 1970 and has been observed every January since. Blood and platelet donations often decrease in the winter months due to the blustery, cold weather and the increase in illness during winter months. National Blood Donor Month is observed with the goal of increasing blood and platelet donations during these months, especially January.
Did You Know That You Can Donate Blood and Platelets Right at Roswell Park?
Roswell Park transfuses more than 17,000 blood products each year! Thanks to the Donor Center and its committed blood donors, Roswell Park is able to meet the needs of its patients.
The Donor Center at Roswell Park was established in 1964. It’s among the three oldest platelet collection facilities in the country. The Donor Center is also one of the few centers in the country that employ an all-professional nursing staff.
Team Donor Center: Riding to Honor the Patients They Serve
The Donor Center has been a committed partner of The Ride For Roswell for many years. In fact, for the past 10 years it has had a Ride team. And they have consistently ranked among the Ride’s top 10 fundraising teams!
We asked Maria Turner, team captain and Marketing and Communications Manager in Roswell Park’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, why her team rides. Here’s what she had to say:
“First, we are committed to contributing to the overall fundraising objective. And, as proof of that, I’m proud to report that our total fundraising efforts for the past 10 years have brought in over $250,000. In addition to showing our direct support for The Ride’s overall objective, participating is a great opportunity for us to increase awareness about the need for blood and platelet donations. That’s what the Donor Center does — makes sure that our patients have the blood products they need.
“The fundraising is great; the new potential blood donors are great; but by far the greatest success to come out of our involvement in The Ride is the privilege of getting to know a very special family each year. We have made it our annual tradition to ride in honor of a Roswell patient that has benefited from blood or platelet transfusions.”
We are truly grateful for the Donor Center’s commitment to The Ride and raising critically needed funds for Roswell Park. And a big thank-you for all they do for the Roswell Park patients!
